The COVID-19 pandemic continues to expose a collapsing healthcare and economic system.  According to the US Department of Labor, 22 million Americans have filed for unemployment equally 13.5% of the work force.  The Los Angeles Times’ indicates the peak unemployment rate in the Great Depression was 24.9%.  As the crisis deepens, communities struggle.

History continues to highlight social systems.  From Bloomberg: “Barter, the trade system prevalent in the Middle Ages, is back in the time of coronavirus pandemic, with a modern twist…Social networks Facebook and Nextdoor are flooded with posts from neighbors and friends seeking to swap eggs for toilet paper.  Small and midsized businesses, whose cash trade has dried up from the economic fallout of shelter-in-place orders, are turning to online barter exchanges.”

The crisis continues to inspire artworks!  As a result, I’ve created a limited edition of 19 FATAL FAILURE artworks.  The number represents the COVID-19 namesake and 2020 is the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment (women’s right to vote).

FATAL FAILURE description: My art practice investigates symbols of influence and power that impact perception.  Donald J. Trump’s constant gaslighting, lies, exaggerations, and false promises continue to have dangerous consequences.  At Trump’s COVID-19 press conferences, officials fawn over the dear leader like a dystopian dictator melodrama.  As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads across America, Trump continues his racist rhetoric and press attacks.  Like a computer system abruptly shutdown, a red hat with the words FATAL FAILURE mimics Trumps signature swag.  No prop, performance, or lie will be able to hide the truth.

Final thoughts:

John Steinbeck: “The bank is something more than men, I tell you.  It’s the monster. Men made it, but they can’t control it.”

Mahatma Gandhi: “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.”

Once again, unfettered greed and incompetence have exacerbated this crisis.  We’ll rebuild for a more equitable and justice for all!
