TALK

Balloons and beer!

Saturday was the Right Here, Right Now artists’ talk and closing reception at the Richmond Art Center!  Artists discussed the inspirations behind their artworks.  During the event, I gave away fifty PRESIDENT ABOVE LAW balloons.  In addition, the amazing Origin Brewer (Michelle Baker) provided tastings for the event.  A special day indeed!

From the Richmond Art Center: “Right Here, Right Now, Richmond looks at the excellent and risk-taking new work being made in our city.  Works in the exhibition include painting, fiber art, sculpture, mixed media, photography and digital art; and together represent the breadth and depth of creative practices and ideas Richmond artists are exploring.”

PRESIDENT ABOVE LAW description: My art practice investigates symbols of influence and power that impact perception.  President Donald J. Trump disregards congressional subpoenas, obstructs justice, and encourages foreign election interference for personal gain.  Fifty custom balloons mimic the signature MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN hats totally the number of U.S. states.  The artworks become bloated reminders that despite articles of impeachment, a Senate wall of sycophants has protected Trump.  Democracy will deflate if left unchecked.

PRESIDENT ABOVE LAW.

At the performance, I read the below poem:

vote

a

booming

economy

for

who?

Mr. Ger-ry-man-der,

living in a cesspool of privilege-

filled

with

thoughts and prayers, and

bureaucratic loopholes

lined

with

hate.

We the People

-vote-

“sometimes”

counted

and

“somewhat”

equal.

We

persist

because:

hope

is the

only

chance-

We

have.

PRO-CHOICE, wire and a hanger.

Taking risks includes sharing truths.  Right Here, Right Now artists shared backgrounds and connections to Richmond.  The exhibition closes on March 6th at the Richmond Art Center.  Support local artists and register to vote!
