According to Merriam-Webster, the word autocracy is a “government in which one person possesses unlimited power.” In my art practice, I’m fascinated by how alternative realities create false narratives, perspectives, and theories. Researching current politics, my goal is to identify how patterns of influence impact perception and social behavior. Declaring news as fake gaslights truth.

From The Guardian: “….Trump has attempted to hide his personal finances from the public and benefit from private business while in office, both of which have been challenged in the courts. The press is doing yeoman’s work in exposing Trump’s wrongdoing even as Trump continues to attack them. Civil society activists are on the streets every day advocating for the rights of Americans while Trump tries to restrict the rights of people to vote.”

Donald J. Trump to supporters last year: “Stick with us. Don’t believe the crap you see from these people, the fake news. … What you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.” This quote is totalitarian rhetoric and inspired my art series titled LOGIC.

The continuous lying inspired my artwork LEFT RIGHT. Description: President Donald J. Trump and surrogates promote alternative realities to disorient and distract American citizens. Truth and logic become contorted causalities to reality. Trump regurgitates a fascist narrative to not believe what you read or see. If the leader says left is right and right is left it is true. Democracy hangs in the balance.

The Guardian: “But in order to keep power, autocratic leaders need to attack institutions, and the ways that the institutions respond help determine the fates of democracies. The intelligence community whistleblower who exposed Trump’s wrongdoing over Ukraine and the corroborating testimony of the career foreign service officer Marie Yovanovitch, the former ambassador to Ukraine, illustrates exactly the way the democratic institutions are supposed to operate.”

The allure of power has eroded truth. Left is left and right is right. Believe what you see, read, and vote!
