The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word truth as “the body of real things, events, and facts.” For years, I’ve examined how alternative realities create new narratives, perspectives, and theories through art. Distortion can be magnified through addiction, mental illness, greed, and political gain. Professional liars are artisans in truth manipulation.
Tony Schwartz was the ghostwriter for President Donald J. Trump’s The Art of the Deal book. In a The New Yorker interview, Schwartz shares Trump’s voice: “I play to people’s fantasies. . . . People want to believe that something is the biggest and the greatest and the most spectacular. I call it truthful hyperbole. It’s an innocent form of exaggeration—and it’s a very effective form of promotion.” President Trump is a master of vocabulary manipulation with short phrases, nicknames, and distortion.
6 variations of TRUTH artwork description: My art practice investigates symbols of influence and power that impact perception. President Donald J. Trump and surrogates promote alternative realities to disorient and distract American citizens. The word TRUTH is translated into the six official languages of the United Nations: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish. Despite attempts by leaders to repeat false narratives and lies, citizens globally will demand and protect a free press for all. No amount of “truthful hyperbole” can hide from justice.
Research for 6 variations of TRUTH was an interesting process collaborating with numerous sources. Confirmation of translations came from the Russian Language Academy (TRADUX Foreign Language Academy), The French Class, Arabic Language Service, Day Translations, and the Consulate General of China in San Francisco. A special thanks to Ayad Kholaifat from Arabic Language Service for his assistance and enthusiasm for the project!
May truth start and flourish with Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Nobel Peace Prize speech in 1964: “I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.”
