My art practice investigates symbols of influence and power that impact perception. Alternative realities and disorientation create new narratives, perspectives, and theories. Current politics distort social behavior, institutions, and history. Repeating a lie doesn’t make it true.
As a multidisciplinary artist, my art incorporates various mediums and forms. The goal is to mimic how truth can be altered or skewed. President Donald J. Trump is gaslighting America through texts, falsehoods, and bullying tactics. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline: “Gaslighting is an extremely effective form of emotional abuse that causes a victim to question their own feelings, instincts and sanity, which gives the abusive partner a lot of power (and we know that abuse is about power and control). Once an abusive partner has broken down the victim’s ability to trust their own perceptions, the victim is more likely to stay in the abusive relationship.”
CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS artwork description: Since becoming president, Donald J. Trump has broken political norms including alienating allies, befriending enemies, disrespecting journalists, and undermining institutions. The constant gaslighting of truth has created a constitutional crisis leaving lasting impacts on democracy. Hopefully, the Founding Fathers anticipated foreign electoral intervention along with a megalomaniac barreling America into a kleptocracy and autocracy.
Avoiding politics and maintaining the status quo results in failed policy. Robert Reich in Salon: “I have news for you. We’re already in a constitutional crisis. For a year and a half the president of the United States has been carrying out a systemic attack on the institutions of our democracy.” History has proven that doing nothing is acceptance.
DRAINING THE SWAMP DOUGHNUTS AND BACON artwork description: One of president Donald J. Trump’s campaign pledges was to “drain the swamp” and make the government honest. Meanwhile, U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, the steward of American’s lands, has deep fossil fuel industry ties that contradict the agency. Recently, the National Park Service reversed an Obama-era rule allowing brown bears to be baited with bacon and doughnuts. In addition, spotlights can be used to kill hibernating mother black bears and cubs.
Privilege can afford ignorance and the illusion of reality. Martin Luther King Jr.: “The day we see the truth and cease to speak is the day we begin to die.” Freedom of speech and expression is the thread that supports humanity…
