Where Women Are the Majority

In the December 2009 Artnews magazine, Hilarie M. Sheets wrote an article titled “Where Women Are the Majority.”  The article goes into depth about collectors who focus on female artists motivated by feminism, activism and quality.

Collectors of particular note:

Linda Lee Alter is a collector with over 400 pieces mainly represented by women artists.  Sample artists in her collection: Alice Neel, Betye Saar, Elizabeth Catlett, Judith Schaechter, Viola Frey and Ana Mendieta.  Linda started collecting women’s art when she realized all the art she was collecting was done by men.

Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz’s are collectors where 95% of their several hundred piece collection are by women.  In addition, 70% of Heather and John Podesta’s two thousand piece collection are created by women.

“We like investing in the artists’ careers.” Heather Podesta.
